The Big Picture

CFUW National and Ontario Council

CFUW NATIONAL

CFUW National, located in Ottawa, is a non-partisan, voluntary, self-funded organization incorporated under the Canada Not-for-Profit Corporations Act S.C. 2009, c23. Currently there are ninety-five CFUW clubs, comprised of about 7,500 members, located in every province across Canada.  Since its founding in 1919, CFUW has been working to improve the status of women and to promote human rights, public education, social justice, and peace. We provide about $1M in scholarships through National and club scholarships. CFUW National retains special consultative status with the United Nations Social and Economic Council, and participates in the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women every year by sending a delegation of members to engage with the international community on issues of gender equality. CFUW National is also represented on the Canadian Commission for UNESCO, Education Sectoral Committee.
Each year, CFUW National coordinates a Resolutions process inviting clubs to make a comprehensive proposal on issues they would like National and individual clubs to support. These resolutions are sent to each club. Our Advocacy Committee invites interested members to participate, review the resolutions and make recommendations at a General Meeting (usually March or April) to support, modify, or decline each of the resolutions. Our club votes on the Motion(s) made, and the Chair of Advocacy or her designate communicates our decisions to CFUW National for distribution to the clubs who initiated the resolutions.
